Tier 1- 76 FR- Fair: Casters and Ranged (Priests, Warlocks, Shamans, Mages, Hunters) should have this much
Tier 2- 151- Good: Melee (Rogues, DPS warriors, and maybe meleeing shamans if any?) should aim for this much.
Tier 3- 226- Very Good: Melee If your fighting some boss that deals a lot of fire damage I.E. Ragnoros then you should shoot for this amount.
Tier 4- 300 or 301?- Status?: Tanks usually have this amount.
Hope this is helpful and correct me if I have any mistakes. =)

Granted if you can find good FR gear that doesn't hurt your stats Ie Dragon rider boots for caster and other items Go for it every little bit helps Keep in mind once you start getting past 150 fr for non tanks you really start gimping yourself for a fight so while FR is important being effective is also important.

just remember 150 and 151 make a HUGE difference.. its the change of resistance status from good to very good =). As well as 75 and 76, 225 and 226, 300 and 301.

To back up Sayomara's point of view, I thought I'd post this, which is a point of view of a good friend of mine, which he posted on another guild forum.
I, as someone who plays both a priest and a mage am quite familiar with FR and Attempting to mitigate damage via resistance. However, in MOST raid boss situations, FR is unnecessary for ranged dps, with the major exceptions that come to mind being Firemaw and Flamegor in BWL. In the ragnaros fight, a mage can stack fire ward with greater fire protection potions, as well as ice barrier, if specc'd for it, and mitigate tons of the lava splash damage via those means. Priests can self shield and use GFPP's. For those two classes, more mana, +spell damage / healing, mp5 is preferable, IMO, than FR.

Ok, bored at work today, so I found this page on wowwiki that gets into the calculations of how resists work. The way I'm reading it, it's not so important to hit the 'tiers' (76, 151, 226, 301), because the amount of FR you have is calculated into a weighted average of the total amount of damage you will resist given a long enough period of exposure time (max of 75% damage resisted). So the more FR you have, even 1 point more, brings that average percentage up, and increases your chance of resisting. Who knows tho, I could be reading it wrong, or the site could be wrong (pretty sure it's written by humans and not genius aliens or anything). Here's the site, go ahead and flame away and insult my sub-par intellect Whorhay. ;-p www.wowwiki.com/Formulas:Magical_resistance
